Deciding between used and new motorcycle gear can save you money or cost you in safety. Here’s a practical take on when used gear makes sense and when you should always buy new – plus what to check before buying second-hand.
Helmets should generally be bought new. You can’t see internal damage from past impacts; even a single drop can compromise the shell or liner. Age and UV also degrade materials. If you must use a used helmet, only consider one from someone you trust, with a known history and no drops – and even then, many safety experts advise against it. When in doubt, buy new. See our helmet buying guide for what to look for.
Riding jackets and pants can be bought used if they’re in good condition. Check armour pockets for intact CE or equivalent armour, seams for tears, zippers and velcro for function. Avoid items that have been in a crash or have worn-through areas. Wash before use and consider replacing the armour if it’s old or unknown. Our repair service can fix minor damage like zippers and stitching to extend the life of used or new gear.
Used gloves can be acceptable if there’s no damage to palms, knuckle protection or stitching – but they mould to the previous owner’s hand, so fit may be off. Boots are similar: check soles, zippers and armour. If the previous owner has a very different foot size or shape, used boots may never be comfortable. For both, hygiene and odour are also considerations; deep cleaning can help but isn’t always enough.
Trusted sources include friends, riding clubs and verified resale platforms. Inspect in person when possible. For online marketplaces, ask for clear photos of stress areas, labels and armour. Avoid deals that seem too good to be true – counterfeit or damaged gear often looks fine in photos. JFernic Motoren offers resale items alongside new products so you can shop both in one place.
